Zelle’s Sweet Hot Mustard

Lottie Zelle (everyone just called her Zelle) was my maternal grandmother, of whom I only know mostly from stories and pictures. She was a school teacher and raised four children in the 30’s and 40’s…tending a garden, canning, baking…We feel like we would have had much in common with her and much to learn.. This is one of her recipes, and one of our favorites!

This mustard is delicious on sandwiches, brats, as a dipping sauce for a dumpling, as well as an accompaniment for your charcuterie board…Enjoy!

Zelle and Mac

Ingredients:

1 cup dry mustard powder

1 cup vinegar (apple cider, red wine, or your favorite)

2 eggs

1 cup sugar

Directions:

▪︎Mix mustard powder and vinegar, soak overnight or at least 8 hours.

▪︎Mix eggs and sugar until smooth. Add to the mustard mixture.

▪︎Boil in a double boiler, until a thick consistency, stirring constantly. Depending on your double boiler arrangement it may take 10-15 minutes.

▪︎Cool, put into jars or containers. Keep refrigerated.

Note: You can double or triple this recipe. We tripled it this time, and it yielded the six jars pictured.

Since we tripled the recipe, my normal size double boiler was too small. Stacking pot on pot worked just fine…Since we tripled the recipe, my normal size double boiler was too small. Stacking pot on pot worked just fine…
